Red Flight at Whitecliff Vineyards & “Aperol Spritz” at Chemistry Wine Bar

Fall is in the air in the Northern Catskills of New York, and what better way to enjoy the season than by sampling wines from local vineyards? This region has a rich agricultural history, and thanks to its diverse alluvial soils and microclimates, it’s also well-suited to hardy grape varieties. Over the past 20–50 years, many former dairy and fruit farms have transformed into vineyards.

Ready to go tasting on your own? Here are some great spots to explore in the Northern Hudson Valley.

HUDSON

Whitecliff Vineyard & Winery

Best of Flight at Whitecliff Vineyard, Hudson

Founded in 1979 in Gardiner, NY, Whitecliff Vineyard & Winery has grown into one of the largest vineyards in the Hudson Valley, now with two locations. They cultivate over 20 grape varieties between Gardiner and Hudson.

I’ve visited their Hudson tasting room twice—it’s tucked along the Hudson River right at the edge of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. Set on 10 acres of vines and fruit trees, the property offers outdoor tables and a modern indoor space for tastings.

Both times I opted for a self-guided tasting flight. Prices depend on the flight you choose, typically $20–25, with options like Best of Flight, White & Sparkling, and Red. Guided tastings are available for a bit more, depending on staff availability. You can purchase snacks too if you have the nibbles.

This is the only tasting room in the area open seven days a week, making it an easy stop anytime.

Each spot offers something unique—so take your time, explore, and enjoy the tastes of fall. Cheers to discovering new favorites along the way!
