Fellsmere, FL – Interesting History, Good Eats and Neat Shops
We made two separate day trips to Fellsmere, Florida in the last month, and I couldn’t wait to share this hidden gem with you all. If you love small towns with rich history, good food, and a little bit of quirkiness, you’ll definitely want to add this spot to your travel list!
A Little Town with a lots of History
Did you know Fellsmere was the first town in Florida to let women vote? Yep, way back in 1915, five years before the 19th Amendment. The town has over 20 historic landmarks, and if you’re into history like I am, you can take a self-guided walking tour with an app from the city.
We checked out:
📍 Fellsmere Historical Church – Locals built this one in 1922, and despite a storm taking out its spire in 1955, it still stands strong today!
📍 J. Green Carter Building – Built around 1925, beautifully restored, and home to Ditch 13 Gallery and Gifts.
📍 Fellsmere Estates Building – This beautiful building was built in 1926. It has had many uses until it was bought, restored and reopened as the Marsh Landing Restaurant.

Where to Eat

Pulled Pork and Catfish Sandwiches at Marsh Landing Restaurant
Marsh Landing Restaurant – A must-visit for that true Southern feel. We had the catfish sandwich and pulled pork, both amazing!
Garcia Plaza Bakery – Their Mexican bread and fresh pastries are absolutely worth stopping for.

Where to Shop
Ditch 13 Gallery and Gifts – They have the neatest artisan gifts! From homemade candles, jam and honey - to hats, paintings, note cards and even belts and wallets made from alligator skin.

The World’s Largest Frog Leg Festival? Yep!
Every January, Fellsmere hosts the World’s Largest Frog Leg Festival (Jan 15-18, 2026, if you want to plan ahead). There’s food, music, rides, and vendors – and yes, frog legs if you're feeling adventurous!
Outdoor Adventures
If you love the outdoors, you’ll find plenty of spots to explore.
🌿 Blue Cypress Lake – Perfect for birdwatching (so many ospreys!).
🚴♂️ St. Sebastian River Preserve – If you’re lucky, you may see manatees or dolphins at the overlook.

Plan Your Trip
If you want to stay overnight, we recommend Capt Hiram’s Resort in nearby Sebastian. It’s right on the river and has great views!
