Pelican Island + Mini-guide to Melbourne Beach Fl
Looking for a mix of relaxation, wildlife viewing, and coastal charm? Explore the USA's first National Wildlife Refuge and Melbourne Beach, Florida!
Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge
Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge was the first National Wildlife Refuge to be established in the United States by Theodore Roosevelt in 1903. There are a few trails to explore, but the easiest one to walk with the best views is the Centennial Trail.
The Centennial Trail starts from the second parking lot from the main entrance off the Jungle Trail. It’s 0.7 miles long and is kind of wheel-chair and stroller friendly. You’ll walk past a lake and then will approach a boardwalk that has a gradual incline that takes you to a view of Pelican Island.
Bring your own binoculars or view the birds in the distance using the strategically placed viewing stations. It’s a very enjoyable walk, where you’ll get to see a variety of birds including egrets, pelicans and if you’re lucky even a roseate spoonbill.

Your Guide to Melbourne Beach, Florida! 🏖️
From ocean and river views to delicious dining and cozy stays, here’s everything you need to know to plan a visit to Melbourne Beach Florida.
🌿 River and Beach Relaxation? Yes please!
There is one river and four ocean parks to explore in Melbourne Beach Florida. These two are our favorites:
Ryckman Park – Enjoy peaceful river views, a fishing pier, and shaded picnic areas. A great spot for watching the sunset and spotting dolphins and manatees!
Juan Ponce de Leon Landing – Learn a little history while enjoying the ocean at this historic beachfront park commemorating Ponce de Leon’s 1513 landing. Visiting between April - October? You may spot Sea Turtle moms or babies.

Visiting April - October? Maybe you’ll see some Sea Turtles just south of Ponce de Leon Landing.
🍽️ Must-Try Dining Spots
There are quite a few delicious places to dine in Mel Beach. Here are three of our favorites.
Sand on the Beach – This laid-back, oceanfront restaurant offers fresh seafood, burgers, and a full cocktail menu. Perfect for a meal or drinks with a view!
Ocean 302 – Hands down, this is the best wood-fired pizza we’ve eaten. Plus, they have a large draft beer list, a full wine menu, as well as a full bar.
Cafe Coconut Cove – This river view restaurant has it all. Beautiful sunset views and authentic German food and drinks.
